Vocational Students (M Visas)

     The M nonimmigrant category is for students Vocational Students (M Visas) and their immediate dependent family members (spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21) who intend to enroll in an established vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution, other than language training programs. For both visa issuance and admission to the United States, the M-1 student must present a fully executed Form I-20M-N/ID (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status-For Vocational Students) Admission is for a time period necessary to complete the study noted on the Form I-20M plus 30 days or for one (1) year, whichever is less. Change of Status, extensions of status, and school transfers are permitted with prior USCIS approval. However, USCIS has imposed restrictions on changing status to some other nonimmigrant visa categories, such as F-1 and H-1B.
     Employment is not permitted without USCIS authorization. A period of practical training may be authorized, but only after completion of study, and not to exceed six (6) months. Application for and receipt of an Employment Authorization Document card is required prior to commencing employment pursuant to practical training.
